Two legends explain this type of icon.
The Mandylyon of Edessa or the Holy Face is a representation Jesus « non-hand-made image » of our Savior Christ. Unable to travel to Edessa in Syria following invitation of King Agbar V, Jesus sent him the imprint of his face on a cloth and the king was cured of his leprosy.
The Veil of Saint Veronica is the western counterpart of this story: Saint Veronica wiped the face of Jesus of Nazareth on the Way of the Cross. An imprint of Christ’s face remained on the cloth. The very name Veronica seems to be a Latin-Greek combination (vera eikona) meaning “true icon”.
